Intel Releases Core i9-12900KS Processor, Claimed to be World's Fastest

Intel officially launched its newest desktop processor (CPU) Intel Core i9-12900KS. As the name suggests, this CPU with "S" frills is an unlocked version or a more capable one from the Intel Core i9-12900K processor which was launched around the end of last year.

One of the improvements in this latest processor is the maximum clock speed (turbo) which can now be boosted to 5.5 GHz, instead of 5.2 GHz in the previous version. With such speed, Intel's General Manager of Gaming, Creator & Esports, Marcus Kennedy claims this latest processor is the fastest processor in the world today that can provide the best gaming experience in its class.

"Based on the 12th generation Intel processor architecture, this processor has a speed that can be increased to 5.5 GHz for the first time," said Marcus, quoted by AlfaFreedom from Intel.com, Wednesday (30/3/2022).

"This allows users to experience the game with maximum performance," continued Marcus. To stay optimal, this speed increase is also combined with Intel Thermal Velocity Boost technology to reduce excess heat, as well as Adaptive Boost Technology which allows the processor speed to be increased to maximum numbers when playing games.

On paper, the specifications for the Intel Core i9-12900KS processor itself are not much different from the Intel Core i9-12900KS. Both processors have sixteen cores (16 cores) with 24 threads and 30 MB of L3 cache.

However, the power consumption (TDP) was increased from 125W to 150W to support increased performance, such as the clock speed for the 5.5 GHz turbo mode earlier.

Other supporting features in the latest 12th generation Intel processors include support for PCIe Gen 4.0 and 5.0, as well as DDR4 RAM with a capacity of 3200 mega transfers per second (MT/s) and DDR5 with a capacity of 4800 MT/s.

For availability, users will be able to purchase the Intel Core i9-12900KS desktop processor at many Intel partner retail stores around the world starting April 5, at 739 US dollars.
